Background and history:
The dogue de bordeaux is a very old breed from
the Aquitaine-province in south west of France. The
breed has had many jobs, herding cattle, flock guarding, hunting
and dog baiting. But as early as the 1400 century, it
was only used as an guarding dog. A job it did very well,
without aggressiveness. And to day it’s a much
loved, gentle breed.
General appearance:
The dogue de bordeaux is a very powerful giant,
with a muscular body, that retains a harmonious general outline
in stature, somewhat low to the ground. Distance from
sternum to ground is at most equal or inferior to the depth
of the chest, seen in profile and measured behind the elbows.
Has the appearance of an athletic, imposing and proud, demanding
respect.
Temprament:
The bordeaux is cooperative, intelligent, a
bit stubborn and very attached to the family and loves children.
It`s a god family dog. Don't exercise the dog to hard before
it`s fully grown, it`s a big dog, and it can get joint
problems.
Color:
Reddish brown, the color of mahogny or in the
range of the fawn shades. Good pigmentation is desirable.
Small white patches on the chest and feet are allowed.
Size:
Between 45-50 kg (100-110 lbs) or more. Bitches
are smaller than the maledogs. Males 60-68 cm and females
58-66 cm (23-26 inc). Size should be in proportion to the
size of the head.
